Damelin City takes a stand against rape

Hundreds of students from Damelin City campus took to the streets of Durban on Friday, 15 March 2013, to show their support against rape and against attacks on women in South Africa. Students demonstrated their support with skits, song and dance at the Hoy Park Sports Grounds, echoing the theme 'The Fight Against Rape'. Local DJs: Keesto, Da Babes, Lvovo, Sosha, Koton, Happy Gac and Bhar, all joined the event to show their support for this worthy initiative.

Damelin brand ambassador, Archie Majola endorsed the event and joined students. Archie commended the students for being proactive about social issues. "Our country needs more initiatives like the Damelin Anti-Rape Rally. We are here today to put words into action, and create awareness about sexual violence. I believe our efforts at Hoy Park will be a springboard for others to be more hands-on about this issue. I echo the students' sentiments today in saying "zero tolerance for rapists", said Archie. Students designed posters and banners bearing slogans in support of rape victims, and held them up proudly to spread the message.

The event was well supported by large corporates including Virgin Active, ABSA, Intel and DSTV, who came with full branded gear in support of the worthy cause.

Guest speaker, Ms Nonhlanhla Nyawo represented the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) with an informative talk to students. Nonhlanhla has been living with HIV from 1996, and urged students to be responsible in their relationships, in light of the life-changing consequences of having unprotected sex.

The event set the tone for the 2013 academic year, and encouraged our students to take responsibility for a socially-conscious and responsible generation.
