Despite the cold weather, students were geared in their warm sports clothing and prepared to go head to head for the medals and cups. Though the activities were competitive, there was still a friendly atmosphere between the contenders. They shouted and cheered each other on, which served the purpose of the day for them to have fun while getting fit.

Students participated in activities varying from netball, soccer, volleyball and more. They were divided into different teams and they gave it their all and aimed for the top spot. The battles were highly attractive and exciting. The Sports Day was a fun-filled event which took the students out of their normal routines and comfort zone. It was a well organised and successful event.

The winning team Amakipkip took home medals for their impressive 5 to 3 win and the netball team won 8 goals to 4. All the winning teams were awarded medals for their exceptional performance and participation.

Bongani Zitha, a second-year Journalism and Media Studies student said it was fun and refreshing to participate in activities outside of the classroom. “I had lots of fun. The Sports Day was a great initiative, as we got to kick back and relax. I realised how unfit I am so exercising will definitely go down as one of my goals.”

According to Noreen Matsikidze, FET Programme Coordinator, students shared the sentiments that participating in such sports events provided them with great fun and is one way to keep them both physically and mentally fit.

It wasn’t only the athletic talents that were shown off on the day, as students volunteered their music skills to keep the crowds entertained. On the decks was Damelin Benoni's very own DJ who kept the hits coming and the crowd moving. Sports, dance and music were the order of the day.

Students enjoyed a fun-filled day outside of their campus and this reinforced Damelin’s initiative to keep students physically active. This helps them to be mentally stimulated.
