Damelin Pietermaritzburg student representative, Denise Zikalala
Denise, originally from Durban, said that being a student and staying away from home has taught her to be independent, self-sufficient and to determine her own future. She is determined to make her own success story and believes that change only comes through action.
Quoting Mahatma Ghandi when he said be the change you want to see, she believes that she is that change. She had always envisioned herself a leader.
“As a leader, you need to strategically look at problems and come up with solutions by inspecting all possible outcomes and thinking out of the box,” said Denise.
Her goal is to improve campus life for students. She seeks to develop their outlook on life and ensure that they leave campus as positively empowered individuals with a career driven perspective on life. She hopes that she will be the link between the students and management.
“I want to align positive movement of student goals and influence a culture that rejects mediocrity,” said Denise.
Denise who by her own definition, is goal oriented, ambitious, hardworking and very talkative believes that there is a lot of work that needs to be done on the campuses to ensure that the students get an even better college experience than they are already used to. She admits however there is so much she wants to do and so many lives she wants to impact in a short space of time.
As a young lady in a modern society, she thrives on being an innovative thinker in everything she does whether it is personal or academic. She is continuously searching for resolutions that can make life more convenient
The newly elected SRC president loves being on campus and enjoys the events and community engagements that take place. Most importantly she loves to hang out with her friends and nurturing the relationships she has with her friends including the Damelin staff. She loves being part of a campus that is always hip and happening.
Denise adds that she is looking forward to finishing her Diploma, B Tech and M Tech, finding legitimate employment and the prospects of one day starting a successful business.
Damelin encourages student development and believes in unearthing and nurturing the leadership skills that students possess in and outside of a campus environment.
