School leavers start to make big life decisions about which career path to journey on, which is the best institute to apply to or if studying is really an option for them. However most of these decisions are dependent on whether or not they have passed their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
Despite the matric pass rate increasing by 1.8%, thousands of learners are looking to redo, rewind and rewrite.
In KZN alone, a total of 49,618 learners failed out of 147,646 who wrote the NSC examinations while 72.5% of the 800,000 learners in the entire country passed. Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana, described this as worrying and alarmingly too high.
Archbishop Emeritus Njongonkulu Ndungane said the national pass rate is quite poor and is very disturbing. SA Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) also said the increase was not enough.
The Department of Education has therefore announced that matrics who have failed and are looking to rewrite still have a chance to advance from Grade 12 through the specially designed Second Chance Matric Support Programme which aims to provide support to learners who have not been able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the extended Senior Certificate (SC).
This is done by innovative ways that will help learners adequately prepare for the NSC examinations. This will be done via Face to Face Classes, Multimedia Broadcasting Solutions, Digital Online Courses and Printed Resources.
An alternative option for a matric rewrite is via convenient distance learning institutions.

The first one is the National Senior Certificate which is granted to unsuccessful 2016 NSC candidates provided they meet the specific criteria.
