The Win a Home Building Package in Azaadville Gardens was launched in October 2016. Over the last two months, Kaya FM received hundreds of entries from couples, struggling to secure housing, who shared their story with us. They stood a chance to win one of three home building packages worth R700,000. Five couples were selected and went through to a Charity Challenge on 26 November. Team Maphipha, Team Makhathini and Team Sibanda secured their spot in the final round which was an amazing-race-styled time challenge.

“Today is an exciting day, what I like about this year’s giveaway is that we have taken it up a notch. The amazing race took place in the wee hours of the morning to show our contestants there’s no traffic here." - Thobani Xokozela, Sales Manager, RBA Homes.

Protea Mall was the scene of the first challenge as couples solved puzzles in record time, then jumped into their RBA cars to Leratong Hospital for a word search puzzle. Team Makhatini, who won the first challenge in November, were determined and raced to the finish line in Azaadville to win again. The couple who met at Noord Taxi rank five years ago showed a lot of determination. They were closely followed by Team Maphipha who have just had a new baby and would really benefit from a new home.

180 with Bob was on hand to broadcast and take listeners through the proceedings of the day which started in the early morning. By 6am, the three couples started the amazing around the West Rand. “It’s been an amazing journey with RBA. It's our third giveaway and at Kaya FM we are all about home, family and creating a better life for the Afropolitan and we are grateful to have RBA come onboard and have a partnership with Kaya, says Linda Reddy, Chief Operating Office at Kaya FM.

The final part of the competition at the show house in Azaadville was finding the right key to open the door to the showroom house. Team Makhatini who placed first were a bundle of nerves as they chose their key from a box held by the competition auditor from PWC. All three teams chose a key in random selection and waited for Kuli Roberts to call them up one by one to try and open the door. Team Makhatini who had a phenomenal run throughout the competition had lady luck on their side and opened the door to their dreams, winning a new house scheduled to be built in 2017 according to the housing package they choose.

“I was scared but I told myself whether it opens or not it would be God's will,” said an emotional Phatwa Makhatini describing how he felt as he turned the key to win the prize. All three teams did a great job and showed they were up to the task of competing for a brand new house from Kaya FM and RBA.

Team Makhatini take the spoils and see their dream of a new house fulfilled

Team Makhathini - Phathwa and Nelly Makhathini - (Winner of house and R10,000 voucher)
My name is Nelly Makhathini and I am entering this competition because I would like to surprise my husband of two years. We met at Noord Taxi rank (he is a taxi driver) and I had just attended a very frustrating CCMA case. He says he saw me and even though I was dressed smart, he told himself that even as a taxi driver he could score himself a sophisticated woman (don’t ask why he thought this) Long story short, we ended up married six months later and are currently living in the backyard of my parents’ home. He feels very bad that because he earns a low-income he is unable to provide a home for both of us, and really tends to be depressed. I want my husband to know that irrespective of whether we win this home, I will love him just as he is and for who he is. God may bless us with this home or another, but my love will never change because of finances. I am the breadwinner taking care of the family (my mum the kids and siblings) and this really puts pressure on my husband.

Team Maphipha - Banele and Jabulile Maphipha (2nd place R5000 voucher)
I recently paid lobola for my future wife and I have lost my job and we have a new born baby who we believe he needs a good home we raise him on while I’m still looking for a permanent job.

Team Sibanda - Bhekimpilo and Thandi Sibanda (3rd Place R3000 voucher)
My wife and I should win this prize because we have been married for four years and we have been trying for children but God has not answered us yet. We would like to take the route of adoption and give love to two children who deserve our love which we would have shown to our own children, l believe that winning this house will qualify us to adopt.
