As part of the school holiday food parcel distribution project, which is now in its second year, Tiger Brands has distributed 13,485 food parcels to learners attending non-fee paying schools. These learners also benefit from the Tiger Brands Foundations in-school breakfast feeding programme. A batch of 1,500 food parcels has already been distributed by the Department of Education (DBE) to 300 learner headed household in each of the remaining five provinces.
The distribution of the food parcels started on 08 December 2014 while the last batch of food parcels was distributed on the 10thof December at Mthayiza Primary School in Kabokweni, Mpumalanga.
"The Department of Basic Education provides more than 9 million learners with a nutritious lunchthrough the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) in 19,800 schools. The Tiger Brands Foundation complements the NSNP by feeding 39 350 learners in 62 non-fee paying schools with its in-school breakfast feeding programme to date," said Dr Faith Khumalo, the Chief Director for Care and Support in Schools at the Department of Basic Education, "The Tiger Brands food parcel project ensures that learners remain well-nourished and return to schools in January healthy and ready to learn."
"The December Food Parcel Project forms part of our ongoing strategic partnership with the Department of Basic Education where we jointly work towards the nourishment of our learners that aims to address food security challenges in our country," said Ms Jabu Ntsele, Group CSI Manager for Tiger Brands, "Since December 2012, close to 60,000 food parcels distributed thus far by Tiger Brands through the Food Parcel Project have ensured that the good work done by NSNP and the Foundation is not reversed during the long school holidays."
The food parcels which are packed in 20-litre food safe buckets contain the following products as well as a meal plan:
