    Kenya slashes mobile call costs

The cost of making phone calls from mobile phones in Kenya has dropped drastically by between 50 and 75% in recent weeks, causing the country's inflation rate for the month of August to fall.

UK newspapers The Guardian reported on Tuesday (7 September 2010) that a price war among mobile phone operators has been welcomed by local customers. However, The Guardian noted that many Kenyans are still not able to afford the call tariffs and rely heavily on text messages.

Census figures released by the government last week suggested that two thirds of households own a mobile phone in Kenya.
