Kenya's Business Environment Improves - World Bank

Kenya has implemented four reforms to improve the business climate for local entrepreneurs, which earned it a higher score in the World Bank's ease of doing business index 2016.

In a report published on 28 October 2015, The World Bank said the country has implemented reforms in starting a business, getting electricity, registering property and getting credit. "Kenya launched government service centers offering company preregistration services in major towns, reducing the time required to start a business by four days. Ten years ago, starting a business in Kenya took 54 days. Now it takes just 26 days - less than the regional average. Kenya (also) made starting a business easier by reducing the time it takes to assess and pay stamp duty," the World Bank said in the 2016 Doing Business Report.

According to the index, Kenya ranked 108 in 2016 from 129 in 2015. The index ranks 189 economies each year on their ease of doing business, and it measures how close each economy is to global best practices in business regulation. A higher score (a score close to one) indicates a more efficient business environment and stronger legal institutions.

The rankings are determined by sorting the aggregate distance to frontier scores on 10 topics which include ease of doing business, starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity and registering property. Other areas that are scored for the index are getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency.
