Refugees take on digital jobs
Refugees living at the world's largest makeshift camp in Kenya are being offered the opportunity to earn up to two US dollars an hour by participating in a digital pilot project.
US-based charity Samasource has provided computer access and trained residents of the Dadaab camp to perform a range of jobs like data-entry, comparing texts or looking for copyright violations in pictures. Small North-American companies benefit from the project by outsourcing routine tasks through the website CrowdFlower. An iPhone application has also been released to allow North-American residents to donate their time and check the work done by refugees.
The project has been going on for two months now and Samasource plans to extend it to other communities in Pakistan, Uganda, Ghana, Cameroon and India.
